Seasonal Planning
By LuxoPacks Production Team October 2026
A custom advent calendar box is one of the slowest seasonal packaging jobs to plan: 12 to 25 doors or drawers, each sized to a product, assembled mostly by hand, then shipped by sea in time for autumn shelves. For Christmas, overseas brands usually sample in late spring and place the bulk order by early summer. This guide compares the five structures buyers choose from, explains drawer sizing and the custom-versus-standard decision, and lists what to send for a quote.

The five advent calendar structures
| Structure | What it looks like | Best for | Planning note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drawer cabinet | A rigid cabinet with a grid of numbered pull-out drawers | Jewelry, beauty minis, candles | Each drawer is assembled by hand; see our advent calendar drawer box |
| Doors or windows | Numbered doors on the front panel open onto a tray of cavities | Chocolates and sweets | The simplest structure; often folding board |
| Book or cabinet with doors | A closed gift box that opens like a book or wardrobe to reveal the drawers | Beauty, fragrance, premium gifts | Kept as a storage box after December; see our cabinet with doors |
| Tower | Stacked small boxes forming a tower or tree | Tea, snacks, small accessories | Often corrugated; check stability when filled |
| Shaped case | Suitcase, round or house shapes with drawers of different sizes | Limited editions | New tooling and multiple materials; the longest lead time |
Match the opening system to the contents and assembly process. Drawers allow individual removal, while other formats reveal products differently and require different packing work. A reusable-looking outer case is not enough if the smallest compartment jams or the heaviest product destabilizes its tray.
12, 24 or 25 doors?
- 24 is the classic count: one door per day, 1–24 December.
- 25 adds Christmas Day, often a larger final drawer.
- 12 suits beauty, spirits and higher-value gifts: fewer, fuller doors and a smaller box to ship.
Treat 12, 24 or 25 openings as a content decision. Map every item to an opening, identify repeated or unusually large products, and settle whether compartment sizes may vary. A visually regular front can conceal unequal internal needs that must be resolved before the case dimensions are approved.
Sizing the drawers
Start from the largest item a single drawer must hold, measured with its wrapper, then add clearance so the drawer slides without catching. A US packaging maker's reference for a rigid drawer calendar is about 320 × 400 × 60 mm overall with cells of about 50 × 50 mm, but a lipstick, a mini bottle and a chocolate all need different drawers. Equal drawers are simpler; mixed sizes are possible, but each size is a separate part to make and check. Our gift box size guide covers interior dimensions and clearance.
Tell the factory the filled weight as well: 24 filled drawers can be heavy, which decides the board grade and how the drawers are built.
Fully custom or a standard structure?
This is the most common question from smaller brands ordering 100–200 calendars. Two routes:
- Standard structure, your print and insert: an existing cabinet or door layout printed with your artwork, with an insert cut for your products. Less tooling and fewer sampling rounds.
- Fully custom: your own shape, door layout and drawer sizes. More distinctive, but it needs new tooling and more time.
Ask each supplier to quote both on the same specification. Minimum quantities, sample and production timing for calendar boxes depend on the structure and are confirmed after it is reviewed.
The ordering timeline
| When | What must happen |
|---|---|
| March – April | Choose the structure, door count and contents; send sizes for a structure review |
| May – June | Physical sample and artwork approval; one revision round still fits |
| By early July | Bulk order placed; production and hand assembly |
| August – September | Inspection and sea freight (calendar packaging guides plan about 5–7 weeks) |
| October – November | Calendars in warehouses and on shelves |
The 5–7 week freight figure comes from a US packaging maker's advent calendar box guide (Packify) and is a planning assumption; ask your forwarder for the actual door-to-door transit.
If you are already late
- Use a standard structure instead of a shaped case.
- Cut to 12 doors: fewer parts to make and assemble.
- Switch drawers to doors and a tray: much less hand assembly.
- Plan next year now: start the structure review and sample over the winter, well ahead of the summer order point.
Air freight is rarely economic for calendar boxes: they are bulky and mostly air. If you also sell for Ramadan, see our Ramadan calendar box timeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I order custom advent calendar boxes?
For Christmas, treat early summer as the order point. Fix the structure, door or drawer count and drawer sizes in spring, approve a physical sample in May or June, and place the bulk order by early July so the calendars can be produced, inspected and shipped by sea in time to reach shelves in autumn. Exact sample and production dates are confirmed after the structure is reviewed.
How many doors or drawers should an advent calendar have?
24 is the classic count, one per day from 1 to 24 December. 25 adds Christmas Day, and 12-day calendars are popular for beauty, spirits and higher-value gifts because each door can hold a fuller item.
Should I choose a fully custom calendar or a standard structure with custom print?
For small runs, a standard structure with your own print and a custom insert is usually the faster and simpler route; a fully custom shape needs new tooling and more sampling. Ask suppliers to quote both routes on the same specification so the difference is clear.
What size should each advent calendar drawer be?
Size each drawer from the largest item it must hold, measured with its wrapping, then add clearance so it slides freely. Drawers can be equal or mixed sizes; every different size is a separate part, so mixed layouts take longer to sample.
What if I am too late for this Christmas?
Simplify: use a standard structure, cut to 12 doors, switch drawers to a door-and-tray layout, or split the order and plan next year's run now. Air freight is rarely economic for bulky calendar boxes.

Put this guide into practice
Approve a numbered compartment map and loaded case, not only the outer artwork. Recheck retrieval, sequence and packing instructions whenever one day’s product changes.
