There is no universal small, medium or large standard. The first three rows are nominal inch-based examples with rounded millimetre conversions; the square example is millimetre-based. One inch equals 25.4 mm. Choose one controlling unit for the dieline and treat the other as a reference.

Buyers often search by shape or by a round number — an 8×8 gift box, a 12×12 box, a large gift box. These rows show what each size usually holds and which board grade the thickness table below points to. They are planning examples, not stock sizes: every box is built to your interior dimensions.

Square boxes: a wide square base lets items slide, so most square gift boxes need an insert or divider to hold each piece in place. Large boxes: above 250 mm on the longest side, or above about 1 kg of contents, review thicker board and test lid stiffness on the loaded sample; if freight and storage matter, a collapsible magnetic box ships flat (from 500 pcs). How Sizing Works
Interior Dimensions, Explained
Ask where the stated interior dimension is measured and what occupies that space. A shoulder, folded insert, wrap turn-in or lid lining can reduce the usable area even when the nominal box size is unchanged. Record the product envelope and insert layout separately so a supplier does not interpret the requested size as an exterior measurement.
Measure the product in its shipping condition and agree clearance, insert wall thickness and removal space. A foam recess and a folded-card tray need different fit allowances; approve them on a loaded sample. Custom dimensions affect board area, cutting layout, insert tooling and packing efficiency, so compare quotes using the same finished specification.
Board choice depends on span, load, closure and handling. The 1200/1500/1800 gsm entries below are starting points for comparison, not load ratings or a universal thickness conversion. Full material details in the materials guide; quote comparison in the cost guide.
Measurement Method
How to Measure a Product for a Gift Box
Measure the largest packed condition, not only the body of the item. Include caps, handles, labels, protruding settings and the accessories shipped with it. Decide how the product will be gripped and removed, then check the clearance on a physical sample; space that prevents rubbing must not allow uncontrolled movement.
Worked example: a product measuring 90 × 60 × 30 mm with 3 mm clearance on each side needs a minimum interior cavity of 96 × 66 × 36 mm. An insert lip, fabric wrap or protective pad may require more space, so confirm the final dieline and a loaded sample before production.
The size chart below provides nominal planning examples, not universal retail standards. Product geometry, insert material, opening direction, packed weight and shipping protection can all change the finished specification.

GSM is mass per area; thickness depends on density and grade. Treat the approximate values as nominal references and record measured thickness on the approved sample.

Size Drives Shipping More Than You Think
Dimensional weight
Couriers bill whichever is greater: actual or volumetric weight. An oversize rigid box can cost more to ship than to manufacture.
Foldable formats
Foldable magnetic boxes ship flat. Compare the supplier's master-carton dimensions with an assembled rigid format to quantify freight and storage impact for your order.
Right-sizing
Removing an unnecessary 10 mm from each axis can change board use, packed volume and storage space. Keep the clearance needed for protection and removal, then compare the revised sample and freight figures.

Interior vs exterior: corrugated board adds its own thickness. E-flute board is roughly 1.5 mm thick and B-flute roughly 3 mm, as nominal material references. Folds, doubled walls and the closure also affect the finished exterior, so derive it from the actual dieline and loaded sample. Specify the interior size for product fit, and check the exterior size for postage and carton packing.
Dimensional weight: couriers bill the larger of actual weight and dimensional weight. For an arithmetic example using a 139 in³/lb divisor, a rounded 12 × 8 × 5 in parcel gives 480 ÷ 139 = about 3.45 lb before the carrier's billing-rounding rules. A 30 × 20 × 12 cm mailer is approximately this size. Confirm the carrier's current divisor, rounding and actual packed exterior dimensions; a 1 lb parcel can be billed at a greater dimensional weight.
Box inside a box: when a rigid gift box ships inside a mailer, size the mailer from the rigid box's exterior dimensions plus room for the void fill you use, not from the product.

Custom Size Boxes
A custom dimension should resolve a product or distribution need. Send the product measurements and layout before fixing a neat exterior size. If several items share one package, identify the largest and heaviest variants and test them against the same insert. Confirm the resulting exterior and export-carton dimensions after the internal fit is approved.

Custom sized boxes are quoted per design and size, so a range of three sizes is three quotes. A physical sample takes 3–5 days and bulk production 15–25 days after sample approval. Use the charts above as starting points, then confirm the interior on the sample.

Gift Box Sizing FAQ
What is the most common custom gift box size?
A 200 x 200 x 80 mm interior (about 7.9 x 7.9 x 3.1 inches) is one square planning example, not a universal standard or measured popularity ranking. Choose size from the actual packed product and insert.
Are gift box dimensions interior or exterior?
Either basis may appear in a quotation. Ask the supplier to label usable interior and closed exterior dimensions separately, in the same units and orientation. Derive the exterior from the approved structure, not a universal wall allowance.
How much clearance should I allow around my product?
Agree clearance for the actual product, insert material, removal method and protection requirement. In this page's arithmetic example, 3 mm per side adds 6 mm to each axis; it is not a universal fit tolerance.
What size gift box do I need for an 8 oz candle jar?
The chart includes 100 x 100 x 120 mm and 130 x 130 x 110 mm examples, but candle volume does not define jar dimensions. Measure the actual jar, lid and protective packing, then approve the insert, board and loaded fit.
Do custom sizes cost more than standard sizes?
Custom dimensions change board area, cutting layout, insert tooling and packing efficiency. Ask suppliers to quote the same dimensions and separate any setup or tooling so standard and custom formats can be compared on the same basis.
How does box size affect shipping cost?
Couriers compare actual and dimensional weight, so unused volume can raise freight and storage cost. Right-size the interior around the product and clearance, then compare assembled and foldable structures using carton dimensions from the supplier.
Can you make custom size boxes with no minimum?
No. Custom size boxes have a minimum per design and size: 500 pcs for rigid gift boxes and 500 pcs for corrugated mailer and shipping boxes. A physical sample can be made first, in 3–5 days, to check the fit before you order.
How do I choose custom shipping box sizes?
Start from what goes inside: the product plus its insert for a gift box, or the gift box's exterior plus void fill for a shipping box. Confirm exterior dimensions from the dieline and loaded sample, including doubled walls and the closure. Compare packed volume and protection together when requesting freight costs.
