The Short Answer
What ISTA Testing Actually Simulates
Test the system that will travel: product, retail package, restraint, protective material and outer shipping configuration. The procedure defines its sequence and conditions; the buyer also needs acceptance criteria for the product and packaging. A structurally intact carton can still contain a scuffed label or a displaced set, so define those concerns before testing.
The series number is the part that matters: 1-Series tests are non-simulation integrity checks, 3-Series tests are general simulations built around a real transport mode, and 6-Series tests are developed jointly with a specific carrier or retailer and only apply to that exact shipping arrangement.
Comparison
The Five Series Buyers Ask About Most
| Series | Test Scope | Typical Use Case | Approx. Test Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISTA 1A | Ambient preconditioning, fixed-displacement vibration and shock; no route simulation or compression test | Baseline integrity check for a lower-value item or an early design iteration | A few hours |
| ISTA 3A | Parcel delivery simulation; shock, random vibration and conditioning as required by the applicable package type | The standard reference for an individually shipped parcel — most DTC and corporate-gift shipments | 1 working day |
| ISTA 3E | Similar packaged products secured as a unitized load for full-truckload distribution | Palletized or otherwise unitized similar products moving together through a full-truckload system | 1-2 working days |
| ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOC | Amazon's own procedure for a package that ships as its own container with no extra shipping carton | Only when the finished box itself is the outer parcel sent to an Amazon customer | 1-2 working days |
| FedEx small-parcel / freight tests (formerly ISTA 6-FedEx-A / 6-FedEx-B) | Carrier-specific small-parcel or freight procedures; confirm the current name and scope | Requested by brands whose contract or fulfilment partner specifies FedEx by name | 1 working day |
The time estimates in this comparison are planning references, not laboratory commitments. Check the current procedure, package classification, conditioning and report turnaround with the selected lab. Carrier-specific references must be verified before booking.
LuxoPacks can prepare a structural sample for submission to an independent accredited lab under any of these series; the lab, exact procedure variant and turnaround are confirmed per project rather than fixed here.
Decision Guide
Match the Test to How the Box Actually Ships
Ships alone by parcel
For an individual parcel, discuss ISTA 3A with the lab using the complete shipping pack, including any outer carton. Use 1A as an initial integrity screen when appropriate; it does not substitute for the selected 3A distribution test.
Ships as its own Amazon container
If the box is the outer container an Amazon customer receives (no additional shipper), request the current ISTA 6-Amazon.com-SIOC procedure and confirm the specific certification path with your Amazon Seller or Vendor account team.
Ships as a unitized truckload
Use ISTA 3E when similar packaged products form a unitized load for full-truckload distribution. Placing gift boxes inside a master carton alone does not establish that this procedure applies; ask the lab to assess the entire load and route.
Carrier is named in a contract
If a retailer, 3PL or fulfilment contract names a carrier, request its current packaging and test requirements. Confirm any referenced 6-Series procedure and revision with the carrier and laboratory before selecting a general 3A test.
Before You Request a Test
What a Lab Needs From You
| Input | Why the Lab Needs It |
|---|---|
| Finished, filled sample | Testing an empty box or a placeholder product understates real-world stress on the structure |
| Declared gross weight | Drop height and vibration profile in several ISTA procedures scale with package weight |
| Intended ship method | Determines whether 3A, 3E or a carrier-specific 6-Series procedure is the relevant reference |
| Orientation in transit | Some procedures test specific faces, edges and corners rather than every possible orientation |
Send the intended shipping configuration and explain where the package changes hands, whether it travels individually or in a load, and what failure would make it unacceptable. Include the item and pack data listed below. Ask the lab to confirm the procedure, sample count, conditioning and report scope before committing to the test.

Questions
ISTA Testing FAQ
Which ISTA test should I request for a custom gift box shipped by parcel?
ISTA 3A is the standard reference test for an individual packaged product shipped through a parcel delivery system such as FedEx, UPS or DHL, and it is the most commonly requested test for direct-to-consumer and corporate-gift shipments.
Do I need ISTA 6-Amazon-SIOC testing?
SIOC addresses a product package that Amazon ships without adding an outer box. Confirm the fulfilment route and current program with Amazon. An overboxed shipment may need an Amazon overboxing procedure; do not choose 3A or 3E solely because a separate corrugated shipper is present.
What is the difference between ISTA 1A and ISTA 3A?
ISTA 1A uses ambient preconditioning, fixed-displacement vibration and shock to screen package integrity; compression is not part of that procedure. ISTA 3A models a parcel distribution environment. Choose the test from its scope and the actual shipping route.
How long does ISTA testing take?
A single ISTA procedure at an accredited lab typically runs from a few hours to two to three working days depending on the test series and how many conditioning cycles it specifies; lab scheduling and report turnaround usually add more time than the test itself.
Can LuxoPacks arrange ISTA testing?
LuxoPacks can package a structural sample for submission to an independent accredited lab and adjust the design based on the failure points in the report. Confirm the specific test series, lab and turnaround for your project directly, since these vary by lab availability and are not fixed costs.
