Specify the Food-Contact Conditions
Specify the Contact Layer, Barrier and Intended Use
List every layer that can contact the food: board, coating, liner, ink set-off surfaces and adhesive edges. Dry wrapped sweets differ from hot oily food or moist bakery products. A barrier that improves grease resistance can change folding and end-of-life options. Keep food-contact suitability, fibre sourcing and disposal claims as separate decisions, each tied to the selected construction and destination requirements.
Fill the finished pack with the actual food for the agreed temperature and contact period. Inspect leakage, softening, odour, staining and closure. Obtain suitable documentation for the selected contact materials; appearance and a generic supplier certificate do not settle the intended use.
Compare suitable board with an aqueous barrier or a specified liner, then test grease resistance and moisture response at the expected food temperature and contact time. A water-based coating may contain polymers; it does not by itself establish plastic-free, compostable or recyclable packaging. Check the complete construction and the intended disposal route.
For chocolate assortments, macarons, tea or coffee, bakery items and meal kits, discuss the production hygiene requirements and request the relevant facility and material records. Agree the packaging and food-contact specification for the actual product before sampling.

Product Specifications & Parameters
Specify the board, contact layer, printing and assembly separately. Review the following options against the intended food use and supporting material records:
| Parameter | Standard Sourcing Options |
|---|---|
| Board Material | 300gsm - 450gsm unbleached brown virgin kraft paper, premium SBS bleached white board, clay-coated paperboard (CCNB) |
| Inner Barrier Lining | Aqueous barrier, PLA-based liner or glassine option; confirm formulation, food-contact suitability, grease resistance and intended temperature |
| Safety Standards | Review applicable US authorizations or EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and relevant material rules for the specified contact use; request matching composition and test records |
| Box Configurations | Flat-pack tuck top box, gable top box with integrated handle, pastry box, cake box, sliding gourmet tray, paper tea tube |
| Assembly Structure | Self-locking or tuck constructions; confirm which components use adhesive and assess the complete erection sequence |
| Inks & Colorants | Soy-based, water-based flexographic or offset systems subject to formulation and intended-use review; confirm print-side placement, curing and migration/sensory requirements |
| Outer Finishing | Water-based matte protection, low-odor aqueous gloss, high-definition CMYK solid printing |
| Special Finish | Embossing, debossing, local gloss and gold/silver foil; assess any food-contact or set-off exposure for the selected finish |
| MOQ | 500 pcs per design and size; final specification recorded in the quotation |
| SOP Timelines | Physical sample: typically 3–5 days to prepare. Bulk production: typically 15–25 days following sample approval |
Bespoke Options
Plant-Based Coatings & Fast Assemblies
Combine functional direct-contact barriers with quick folding structures to keep gourmet foods pristine and packaging steps fast:
PLA Corn Barriers
For a PLA-based liner, confirm the polymer grade, permitted food-contact conditions and heat resistance. Compostability needs evidence for the complete pack and a stated composting route; a plant-derived feedstock is not sufficient.
Self-Locking Assembly
Our flat-packed boxes pop up and lock instantly into place without glue lines or tape under high-pressure kitchen service.
Low-Odor Soy Inks
If soy-based ink is requested, obtain the complete ink specification and confirm suitability for its print location, drying process and food-contact exposure. Assess odour and migration on the finished packaging.
Internal Food Grids
Use card dividers or custom slots to separate cupcakes, chocolates or tea bags. If food touches a divider, qualify that material and any coating for the intended contact conditions.
Procurement & Budgeting
Quantity Tier & Pricing Benchmarks
The proposed print, converting and assembly route should be stated for the selected food pack. The following EXW figures are reference benchmarks for a 20x15x8 cm tuck-top pastry box, not a quotation or evidence of a particular production line.
| Quantity Tier (MOQ) | 500 pcs per design and size; final specification recorded in the quotation | Recommended Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| 500 Pcs | $0.70 – $0.98 | Artisanal bakeries, local chocolate launches, boutique tea/coffee gourmet gift packs |
| 1,000 Pcs | $0.48 – $0.68 | Established pastry shops, seasonal holiday hampers, corporate gourmet gifting contracts |
| 3,000 Pcs (Sweet Spot) | $0.28 – $0.42 | Highly optimized cost, custom full-panel branding prints, localized seasonal artwork batches |
| 5,000+ Pcs | $0.19 – $0.29 | Regional confectionery brands, high-volume restaurants, specialized catering franchises |
| 10,000+ Pcs | $0.12 – $0.18 | Maximum industrial scaling, national retail bakery operations, ultimate ex-works savings |
*Prices are ex-works (EXW) and vary depending on exact paper grade, dimension specs, ink coverage, and finish coating. Confirm tooling ownership, storage, reuse charges and any setup waiver in the written quotation; repeat orders still follow the current production minimum.
Target Industries
Crafted for Clean Culinary Presentation
Review packaging structures for the following foods, with the contact layer and handling conditions specified for each application:
Boutique Bakery & Pastries
Greaseproof, folding cartons structured with optional clear cellulose windows to display cupcakes, macarons, and donuts.
Gourmet Chocolates & Sweets
Card structures with individual compartments for truffles and pralines; confirm the liner or tray that touches the food and its applicable documentation.
Specialty Tea, Coffee & Spices
Tubes, tuck cartons or boxes with a specified moisture barrier; assess seams, closures and product retention requirements for the intended shelf life.
High-End Meal Kits & Catering
Heavyweight kraft boxes with handles reviewed against the packed load. Assess grease, moisture and temperature performance with the actual meal; a paper carry box is not automatically an insulated food carrier.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How is food-contact suitability checked for US or EU orders?
Food-contact suitability must be established for the selected materials and intended use. State the food type, contact time and temperature, whether food is wrapped, and the destination. Request the applicable US regulatory basis or EU compliance documentation and supporting tests for that specific construction; there is no blanket FDA certificate covering every box.
How do you specify a grease-resistant barrier?
Compare aqueous dispersion coatings and PLA-based liners against the food, temperature and contact time. PLA is a plastic even when its feedstock is plant-derived, and aqueous coatings may contain polymers. Check grease resistance, food-contact suitability and the evidence for any proposed recycling or composting claim on the complete pack.
Do your boxes ship flat-packed?
Yes. Our food-grade boxes are precision die-cut to ship completely flat-packed. This dramatically reduces storage space in commercial kitchens and bakery warehouses, while lowering inbound transportation costs.
Is assembly fast and glue-free?
Self-locking and tuck formats can reduce some packing steps. Confirm whether the selected article is supplied pre-glued and what the operator must assemble; measure the complete filling and closure sequence rather than assuming a three-to-five-second setup.
What is the MOQ for custom printed food boxes?
Our minimum order quantity for custom dimensions and custom prints is 500 units, allowing artisanal confectioneries and boutique bakeries to enjoy factory-direct setups.
